Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BOTOX® and fillers (like Juvederm® and Restylane®)?

BOTOX is the most popular neurotoxin in the U.S and Canada, today and is used to temporarily inhibit muscle contractions and thereby eliminate wrinkles around your eyes, across your forehead, and between your brows for about 3 months.

Fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane (two brands also made by different companies) are hyaluronic acid particle substances that are used to restore fullness to your face in areas where you need it. Over time, we lose volume in our cheeks, under our eyes, and in our lips. Or perhaps, we just want fuller lips for cosmetic reasons.  Products such as Juvederm and Restylane can add fullness to these areas to enhance our looks or make us look younger instantly.  Juvederm and Restylane fillers can last up to a year or longer.

Who will be doing my medical treatments at Derma Vie?

Derma Vie Medical personnel, a Registered Nurse who provide the medical treatments, have years of experience performing cosmetic injections and other advanced aesthetic services.  Most importantly, Derma Vie medical injectors must have an eye for beauty with the ability to envision how the product or treatment will be best placed to optimize your appearance.  Derma Vie medical staff  have the licensing, training, qualifications and the experience required to provide a safe and expert application of the services that we offer (Face, neurotoxin BOTOX, Juvederm and Restylane fillers, and for Phosphatidylcholine fat reduction, as well as PRP). Most importantly, Derma Vie RN's have expert knowledge about the treatments you need to enhance your natural beauty and improve your appearance without looking over-done.

Are BOTOX, Juvederm, Restylane, Phosphatidylcholine injections safe?

All injectable products offered at Derma Vie are thoroughly vetted and approved by the Canada's Food and Drug Act and Regulations-Health Canada.  As with most aesthetic injections, there are some common and some rare serious side effects that could be experienced.

Why are there so many types of Juvederm and Restylane products?

The Juvederm brand (made by company Allergan who makes BOTOX) includes Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Voluma, and now Juvederm Volbella and Juvederm Vollure!  Likewise, the Restylane family of products (made by Galderma who also makes Dysport) includes Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, and Restylane Silk, Restylane Defyne and Refyne!  All of these products are made of hyaluronic acid but with different particle sizes.   Various size particle fillers are best suited for different areas of the face and how you want them to look.

What is the price of BOTOX® at Derma Vie?

Derma Vie offers BOTOX Cosmetic at typically graduated unit per prices based on how many units you receive.

Can I do Juvederm®/Restylane® and Botox® during the same visit?

Yes.  For a total non-surgical facial rejuvenation, Botox® Cosmetic and dermal fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane® are often used together during the same appointment.  There is no harm in doing both treatments during the same visit.

What is and what is the price of Phosphatidylcholine?

Phosphatidylcholine is an injection treatment that is used to permanently reduce under chin fullness. It can also be used to effectively treat fullness in the jowels.  Tiny acid injections work over time to permanently destroy fat cells in the treatment area.  Usually, 2-4 vials over two visits are required for optimal treatment. The solution is permanent, so once optimal treatment is achieved no future sessions will be required.  The price of Phosphatidylcholine is based on how many vials you buy at once.

Does it hurt to get BOTOX?

BOTOX is injected with the smallest of needle types. It is typically a very quick (less than 5 mins) type of service.  Most time for the appointment is dedicated to discussing which areas and how many units you may need today.  The procedure is almost over right after it gets started!  Many of our guests who decide to get BOTOX go without any numbing or icing at all. However, if you want to have the areas numbed first we can do that for you.

What is the downtime, recovery time after getting BOTOX?

The downtime after receiving BOTOX procedure is typically zero to none.  You may get a few red bumps where the product is injected which will typically go down in about 30 mins.  In fact, most people looking at you right after, would not even know you've had any BOTOX treatment!

Does it hurt to get Juvederm or Restylane?

When you come for an appointment to receive Juvederm or Restylane filler products at Derma Vie you'll have the option to be numbed with topical anesthetic for 20 minutes prior to the procedure.  Some clients request this in order to "take the edge off" of the initial injections.  Generally speaking, different areas of the face have more or less nerves than others and are more or less painful.  For example, everyone feels differently of course, but typical feedback is that treatment under the eyes is not painful.  Likewise Juvederm or Restylane treatment for cheeks is not very painful.  Nasolabial folds (parenthesis lines from nose to mouth) are moderately painful as well as the marionette lines (from the corners of mouth downward) are moderately painful.  The lip injections are probably the most painful considering all of the areas of the face for injections.  However, both Juvederm and Restylane do have anesthetic in the injectable gel product itself.  So, you can think of it like getting dentist injections - this is to say, you can expect to feel the first prick of the needle, but within a couple of seconds the lidocaine anesthetic in the product itself starts working and the lip becomes quite numb.

What is the downtime, recovery time after getting Juvederm or Restylane?

The downtime, recovery time, after getting Juvederm or Restylane dermal filler injections is very dependent on each client and which areas you are getting injected.  Typically, the cheek areas, the nasolabial fold lines beside the nose, as well as marionette lines around your mouth do not have adverse reactions to the filler products.  There is usually not that much swelling, if any at all, and you may leave the appointment looking only better from receiving the service.  You might be able to go right back to work! Lip injections, however, can swell significantly both during or after the appointment.  Some people may swell more than others and some do not swell at all.  Some people may also experience bruising at or near the injection area. Typically, all symptoms will resolve themselves within a couple days or up to one week after the procedure.

Does it hurt to get Phosphatidylcholine?

We can numb your under chin area or other specific areas prior to getting the injections.  The under chin area injections do not hurt so much as the product itself does sting quite a bit for about 5 minutes.  After a few minutes, the under chin area becomes quite numb and you should not feel much pain.

What is the downtime, recovery time after getting Phosphatidylcholine?

There is typically no downtime after getting Phosphatidylcholine.  You can expect that your under chin area will swell quite a bit and you will look worse before better.  The whole process of the product eliminating the fat cells under your chin does take 4-6 weeks.  Typically, people will need at least two treatments to see significant results.

Does it hurt to get Microneedling?

When you come for a Microneedling service, you can expect that we will numb the facial (neck or decollete) surface areas prior to the microneedling procedure. The microneedling skin "pen" does prick your skin with tiny microneedles, so you can feel it.  However, some say that it "stings" the skin surface area more than it actually hurts. Some parts of the face do "sting" more than others, such as the bony areas of your forehead or your cheek bones and bridge of your nose.

What is the downtime, recovery time after getting Microneedling?

Everyone is different, but the typical downtime after receiving a Microneedling procedure is about one day.  During this time you will probably look as if you have a bad sunburn.  You might not want to go back to work or out in public like that. Also, parts of your skin may be slightly scabbed or bruised.  By the second day, you can expect that you can wear makeup and cover up this redness.  Your skin may peel by the third or fourth day, but this should be manageable with a good moisturizer.
